What is the delusion?
Our Podcast: The Ape Delusion confronts the central contradiction at the heart of the podcast: humans are still apes; emotional, tribal, status-driven primates, yet we behave as though we’ve transcended nature entirely. The “delusion” is not intelligence itself; it’s the belief that intelligence has somehow made us exempt from the biological, psychological, and ecological realities that govern every other species.
Our topics reflect our own perspectives and experiences.
We both come from vastly different but deeply experiential worlds — natural history filmmaking, exploration, policing, crisis response, leadership, storytelling, and decades spent observing humans under pressure. We both have seen humanity at its most compassionate and most self-destructive. Our podcast reflects that hard-earned realism: humans are capable of astonishing beauty and astonishing delusion simultaneously.
We question human exceptionalism.
Our podcast challenges the idea that humans are inherently “above” nature. We often behave less like enlightened stewards and more like an invasive species with opposable thumbs and a branding department. “The Ape Delusion” strips away the comforting mythology and asks listeners to examine what we actually are beneath the stories we tell ourselves.
We embrace humour and humility.
Our topics are provocative, but also funny. It signals that the show won’t lecture from a pedestal. We invite listeners to laugh at the species, including ourselves. The humour becomes a tool for perspective rather than cynicism.
We are brilliant, but irrational.
Humanity has built satellites, symphonies, religions, stock markets, social media algorithms, and nuclear weapons, often with the same brain that still panics over status, seeks tribal belonging, fears exclusion, and craves validation. Our Podcast highlights that absurd mismatch between technological sophistication and emotional primitiveness.
We create curiosity.
We create tension. “The Ape Delusion” sounds almost like a scientific theory, a philosophical challenge, and a dark joke all at once. It makes people ask:
What exactly is the delusion?
We step outside of our hubris.
The question; "What exactly is the delusion?" is essentially the premise of our podcast. The title of our podcast, The Ape Delusion, encapsulates our show’s core mission: to step outside the human ego for a moment, look at ourselves honestly as a species, and ask whether wisdom has actually kept pace with intelligence
